When grown outdoors, marijuana plants rely on the wind to
help the fertilization process but also on genetics. Male plants reach sexual
maturity a few weeks before the female marijuana plants do. During those two
weeks they will grow significantly taller than the female and they also start
to produce pollen sacs. These pollen sacs look like buds but they contain the
building blocks for reproduction and no THC.
While the male marijuana plant is busy producing pollen
sacs, the females are reaching sexual maturity. The female plant has to trap
the male pollen and starts producing stigmas. Once trapped, the pollen works
its way into the reproductive system and begins producingmarijuana seeds.
When growing marijuana indoors, like a greenhouse or
bedroom, there isn't much wind. But the wind from the fans or just the fact
that their close together will still produce fertilized marijuana plants. A lot
of growers separate the males from the females once the sex is determined. And
if you don't want to pollinate your females you can just eliminate the males.
But because we're talking about pollination here you want to keep your males
alive. In fact, you only need a single male to fertilize hundreds of females.
So once you've sexed your marijuana plants, pick one big, strong and healthy
male and isolate it from the females. And don't forget to remove the other
